4 Reasons Every Writer Needs A Writing Coach

Your writing isn’t as good as you think.

I was four years into my career as a Writer before I gave in and called on a writing coach. Albeit often overlooked, writing is an art form. And like many artists, I struggle with two things: ego and openness. Needless to say, my ego was not open to the idea of another writer coaching me on what I knew I knew how to do, and do well, might I add. But a six-month stint without a single pitch picked up made me question everything I knew about my abilities as a creative, and it was in feeling the fear of inadequacy that I found the courage to ask for help. I won’t lie, I went in with less than optimistic expectations. I nervously settled behind my laptop screen before my first session began, anticipating the antagonizing hour I was in for. My mind was full of doubt. It’s not too late to run, I thought to myself, and right when I was just about to consider it, my coach popped up on the screen.

“Hi Arah!”, she let out excitedly. “It’s great to see you!”. “Oh, hi”, I said apprehensively. She could sense my hesitance, still, she remained patient and present. As we neared the end of my session, we exchanged a few farewells and agreed to see each other again in two weeks, and we did. And then again after that, and again after that.
